Walt Disney World

Disney’s Cars area at Magic Kingdom now has an official name, two named rides and a tower crane on site, but no opening date. It’s called Piston Peak National Park, and it’s being built in Frontierland where the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island used to be. At D23 in August 2026, Disney’s Michael Hundgen (Vice President Creative, Walt Disney World) and Imagineer Jason Grandt revealed the two rides: Cars Ridge Run Rally, an off-road race up a snowy mountain and through a geyser field, and Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along, a family ride hosted by the demolition derby star from Cars 3.

The honest bit: at the time of writing (October 2026), Disney hasn’t announced an opening year. If you’re booking for 2026 or 2027, it won’t be open, and none of the recent estimates we’ve seen suggest otherwise.

What we know so far

  • Name: Piston Peak National Park (revealed by Disney in June 2025)
  • Location: Frontierland, Magic Kingdom, on the former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island site (announced at D23, August 2024)
  • Theme: a fictional national park inspired by the Rocky Mountains and the American Frontier, with a visitor lodge, ranger headquarters and trails
  • Ride 1: Cars Ridge Run Rally, an off-road rally race
  • Ride 2: Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along, a family ride
  • Big Thunder link: the geysers from Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will stretch into the new area
  • Size: part of what Disney calls the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history, together with Villains Land
  • Opening date: not announced

The two rides

Cars Ridge Run Rally

This is the headline thrill ride. Disney describes a race to find the wildest racer in the mountains: you climb Piston Peak itself to an icy, snow-covered summit, head down a camelback descent, then race through a geyser field and circle the Old Tankfull geyser before the finish, where Lightning McQueen and Mater are covering the race live on Racing Sports Network.

The interesting part is the ride vehicle. Disney says it’s a completely new vehicle, “designed not to simulate an off-road car, but to be one”, with real tyres and suspension reacting to the bumps and rocks underneath. Disney’s press release goes further, calling it a new type of racing experience unlike anything in its theme parks. That’s why we’d be careful about calling it a copy of Radiator Springs Racers in California. It may well feel different, but we won’t know until it opens.

Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along

Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along was named for the first time at D23 2026. Miss Fritter, the “Diva of Demolition” from Cars 3, will appear as what Disney calls a “huge school-bus-sized animatronic”, hosting her wildest demolition derby yet. When Disney first announced the area in 2024, it promised a second ride aimed at the whole family, and this turns out to be it: the 2026 press release pitches it at young and young-at-engine roadsters.

Disney hasn’t shared how the ride works beyond its name, and there are no height requirements, ride times or Lightning Lane details for either ride yet. We’ll add them to our planning tools once they’re official.

How construction is going

Everything in this section is reporting from fan sites and construction-watchers, not Disney announcements.

  • February 2026: BlogMickey reported a Florida permit for water-main work to support the expansion, estimated to finish in December 2027. BlogMickey stressed this isn’t tied to an opening date.
  • 2 September 2026: Inside the Magic reported that the whole Frontierland boardwalk along the old river is now walled off, after half of it closed in early July.
  • September 2026: Disney Tourist Blog and BlogMickey reported a tower crane on site. Construction-watchers see this as the move from underground groundwork to building the ride buildings.

Disney’s own line, from D23 in August 2026, is simply that progress is “fully underway”.

When will Piston Peak open?

Disney hasn’t said. None of its announcements so far, including the D23 2026 reveal and the Walt Disney World 55th anniversary post on 1 October 2026, gives a year.

Fan sites are pointing to 2029 at the earliest. Mickey Visit predicted 2029 back in March 2026, and Disney Tourist Blog wrote in September 2026 that an opening by or before summer 2029 would be a good result. Those are estimates, not dates, so please don’t book a trip around them.

What it means for your trip

If you’re heading to Magic Kingdom in late 2026 or 2027, here’s what to expect:

  • Construction walls around the old Rivers of America, and the Frontierland boardwalk fully closed (reported from 2 September 2026). Disney Tourist Blog also reports that the Big Al’s, Westward Ho and Churro Wagon Cart kiosks in Frontierland have closed.
  • Gone for good: Tom Sawyer Island, the Liberty Square Riverboat and the Rivers of America last operated on 6 July 2025, with Disney closing them from 7 July.
  • Walt Disney World Railroad: at the time of writing, Disney says it closed for “routine refurbishment” from 28 September 2026 and is “expected to reopen November 2026”. So if you’re visiting over October half-term, expect no train, although that reopening date is only expected and could change. When it’s back, it only runs between Main Street, U.S.A. and Fantasyland. Disney expects normal operations to return “when the expansion of Magic Kingdom is complete”. Check the My Disney Experience app before you travel.
  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad stays. Piston Peak borrows its geysers rather than replacing it.

Is Piston Peak part of Villains Land?

No. They’re separate projects in the same corner of the park. Piston Peak sits on the old river site in Frontierland, while Villains Land is being built beyond Big Thunder Mountain. Disney groups them together as the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history. Read our round-up of what we know about Villains Land.

FAQ

When will Piston Peak open at Magic Kingdom?

Disney hasn’t announced an opening date or year. Fan sites are pointing to 2029 at the earliest, but that’s guesswork, and it won’t be open for 2026 or 2027 trips on any timeline we’ve seen.

What rides are in Piston Peak National Park?

Two rides are confirmed: Cars Ridge Run Rally, an off-road race up a snowy mountain and through a geyser field, and Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along, a family ride hosted by Miss Fritter from Cars 3.

Is Piston Peak the same as Cars Land in California?

No. Piston Peak is themed to a mountain national park rather than Radiator Springs, and Disney says Cars Ridge Run Rally uses a completely new off-road ride vehicle.

What did Piston Peak replace, and is the railroad affected?

It replaces the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat. The Walt Disney World Railroad runs only between Main Street, U.S.A. and Fantasyland until the expansion is finished.
